Diabetes: Nutritional Management

Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels that result from defects in the body's ability to produce and/or use insulin. Diabetes affects millions of people in the United States, and is associated with many comorbidities and mortalities every year. Healthcare spending related to diabetes alone has been estimated at more than one hundred billion dollars per year. The mainstays of treatment for diabetes include diet modification, exercise, and medication. This course will cover the nutritional aspects of diabetes treatment. The specific types, mainly types 1 and 2, require slightly different dietary needs. While the diet for type 1 is geared more toward carbohydrate management and consuming a consistent diet, type 2 is geared more toward weight loss and portion control. This course is intended for medical professionals who care for individuals diagnosed with diabetes. Throughout this course, you will do interactive exercises to educate you on the importance of good nutrition in the diabetic patient and help you apply these skills with the individuals you serve.
