Child Abuse

In 2008 in Canada, 85,440 investigations of child maltreatment were found to be substantiated. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Canada is a signatory, requires everyone to provide special protection to children so that they can meet their full potential. In this course, you will learn how to fulfill your responsibility to protect children and youth. You will learn the facts about child abuse through such topics as prevalence and risk, types of abuse, and warning signs that a child may be experiencing abuse or neglect. You will know your role and responsibilities in identifying and reporting suspected abuse and neglect. You will also be able to describe what you need to do if you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, including how to communicate with the child and possible pitfalls to avoid. With the guidance of the interactive exercises and detailed examples in this course, you will be better prepared to handle challenging situations such as abuse and neglect. You will be better able to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children and youth with whom you work. This course is appropriate both for people new to working in social services as well as a refresher for those who have been working in the field for some time.
